Stephanie Hughes, event planner extraordinaire and owner of Diamond Events, is back with some great tips for a fabulous - and safe - Sparkler Exit. To learn more about Stephanie’s event planning services, visit www.weddingsbyde.com.

  1. Length of the Sparklers:  The length of the sparkler is a major factor in having your sparkler exit timed perfectly!  A great online resource is, Sparkle (http://www.sparklersonline.com/) they sell 36″, 20″ and 10 inch sparklers!  The 36 inch sparkler lasts 4 minutes, which is ample time for your guests to light the sparkler, get in place and still have plenty of spark for your picture perfect exit.
  2. Lighting the Sparklers: - Luckily almost every wedding will have access to Sterno’s.  A Sterno® is the chafing fuel put under buffet dishes to keep them warm.  Lasting up to 2-1/2 hours, Sterno® Brand Gel will reach and maintain a temperature of 140 degrees and is non-toxic.  A few Sterno’s® placed along the sparkler line on cocktail tables, is a safe and easy way for guests to light their sparklers.
  3. Lots of buckets:  The guests will need ample buckets filled with either sand or water, to dispose of the sparklers.  It is important to have the containers spread throughout the sparkler line to prevent the transferring of used sparklers.  The rods will be hot and need to be collected with care to prevent any burns or injuries.  Your venue would also appreciate the proper disposable of sparklers to prevent guests from leaving them on the ground and becoming a fire hazard.
  4. Lights, camera, action! It is important to work with your photographer to find the best lighting for your sparkler exit, and the all important sparkler exit shot.  Letting your photographer know ahead of time gives them time to scout the venue and make suggestions for the best location.

More tips & trends from Diamond Events

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Stephanie Hughes is a wedding planner and owner of Diamond Events here in Northern VA. Stephanie recently wrote an article for our planning guide, Brides & Weddings of Northern Virginia (to get your free copy, go to www.bridesandweddings.com and register for our I-tunes gift card drawing). I shared some of her tips a few weeks ago, and thought this was a good time to dispense some more of her great advice.

The one “must have” for your wedding - a budget! Brides and grooms of all budgets are making sure to spend their money (or even mom and dad’s money) wisely. Most couples get at least three quotes for each service they are interested in receiving, making sure to negotiate their exact terms for the best price and quality. All decorations serve double duty - there isn’t one arrangement that gets left behind.

Going “green” doesn’t mean you’re a hippie. You just want to do the small things that count. Couples are doing their part to reduce the environmental impact of their weddings. They are recycling, renting glasses and place settings instead of using disposables, and keeping the ceremony and reception in the same location so guests won’t be using more gas by traveling to different venues.

Something borrowed, something blue, something vintage. Whether it’s a car, dress or venue, there seems to be a touch of vintage in today’s weddings.

I will post some more of Stephanie’s helpful tips in the not too distant future, so visit our Bridal News Blog often. And to learn more about Diamond Events, visit www.weddingsbyde.com.

Wedding trends from an event pro

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Stephanie Hughes, owner of Diamond Events, wrote a great Top 10 Trends article for the upcoming issue of Brides & Weddings of Northern Virginia (to order your free copy and to register for our iTunes gift card giveaway, go to www.bridesandweddings.com). I thought I would share a few of her suggestions:

Let there be light: Centerpieces can provide more than just a beautiful floral visual for your guest tables. Combined with colored gels, water, vases and more, lit centerpieces are not as expensive as they used to be. Battery operated LED lights can be found in clear and an array of colors to customize any centerpiece to your wedding colors.

Weddings are not just for Saturdays anymore: Having your wedding on any other day of the week is a great way to lower wedding costs. A lot of venues have caught onto the fact that Sundays have become popular too, leading couples to become more creative with Thursday and Friday weddings. Not only are venue rental less expensive, it’s also a great way of keep your guest list manageable.

You don’t have to leave the country to experience a destination wedding: Within the state of Virginia, there are a variety of experiences - wine country weekends, resort getaways and coastal excursions - that don’t require a plane ticket.

I’ll be sharing more of Stephanie’s trends in future posts. To learn more about Diamond Events, visit www.dcdiamondevents.com. Or call 703.822.1675/email stephanie@dcdiamondevents.com.

Wedding Wisdom from a top event planner

I’m pleased to have Myrna Grossman, event planner and owner of For All Occasions in Fairfax, on board as a regular contributor to our blog. Check out her page Myrna’s Memos for helpful planning tips and trends.

Most brides seem to operate under the misconception that a wedding planner is only for brides with big guest lists and big budgets. But face it, between a full time career and often school and family obligations, planning a wedding is like a second job. Whether it is full, partial or day-of coordination, a good wedding planner will save you time, stress and even money.
