Karen and Eduardo have one of those special bonds that can only be forged through withstanding adversity together. The couple started dating right when the COVID-19 pandemic struck and shut everything down. Shortly afterward, Karen was diagnosed with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, a rare form of cancer. Eduardo stuck by her side through ten months of daily chemo before the tumor was successfully removed in July 2021. One day, while in remission, Karen came home to find a special dinner Eduardo had prepared, surrounded by battery-operated candles. He mentioned that he couldn’t get two of them to work and asked if she could fix them. When she opened the second candle, a ring fell out, and as she held it to the light, Eduardo proposed to her.

With the turbulence of planning and cancer treatments, Karen and Eduardo considered eloping. But that changed when Karen’s childhood friend, Tommy Waters of The Renaissance wedding venue, offered to help. With his assistance, the couple created a celebration that radiated with light, joy, and spirituality with family and friends from around the world. Eduardo purchased loose benitoite stones — the state gem of California — in a shimmering blue color. He had the stones fashioned into an engagement ring for Karen and a wedding band for himself, signifying their commitment to support each other’s success and growth in all ways. The azure from the gems carried throughout the wedding design, from the wedding party attire to the reception linens. Karen wore an heirloom floral gown with sequin details — loaned to her by her identical twin sister from her wedding 22 years ago. As the couple celebrated with their loved ones, they took the opportunity to look back on how far they’d come together since the uncertainty of Karen’s diagnosis — before looking forward to a bright future together.
