With rosy cheeks, wide eyes, and a happy little smile, this ghost looks much more likely to ask for candy than send anyone running. Add a jaunty black witch hat, a tiny bat companion, and a pumpkin bucket overflowing with sweets, and you have a birthday guest ready for a little Halloween fun.
Created by Dillyn Ketterman of Ketterman’s Kitchen for a child’s second birthday, the ghost cake brings together the sweetness of a childhood celebration and the playful side of spooky season. A white “2” curls across the hat, giving the design its own birthday detail.

A Ghost with Character
The charm is in the expressions. The ghost’s pink cheeks and open smile make it look delighted to be at the party. Beside it, a little black bat has bright eyes and two tiny white fangs. Even the orange pumpkin bucket has a face, with colorful candy and chocolate pieces piled above its rim.
There is plenty to notice before anyone reaches for a cake knife. The hat tilts, the ghost’s white covering falls in soft folds, and the little companions turn a single character into a whole party scene. It is Halloween with a generous helping of birthday cheer.
Children’s character cakes are among Ketterman’s favorite projects, and this was one she had been excited to make. She described the finished creation as “the absolute cutest cake of my life.”
A Sweet Idea for Spooky Season
The cake also came with a behind-the-scenes story. An unexpected outpatient surgery disrupted Ketterman’s schedule, and a pickup reminder brought the birthday order back to her attention. After resting, she began that afternoon, making the buttercream and small decorations while the cake layers baked and cooled. By that evening, the little ghost was finished.
For anyone planning an October birthday or Halloween gathering, the design offers a cheerful starting point. Seasonal cakes can be full of friendly faces and playful details, with a favorite character or birthday number making the celebration personal.
That idea works beyond children’s parties, too. Couples planning a fall wedding, shower, or engagement celebration can bring a little seasonal personality to their dessert table. The key is choosing details that feel right for the occasion and the people being celebrated.
As for this little ghost, its haunting duties could wait. There was a second birthday to celebrate.
