Jana and Vasant’s Vibrant Hindu Wedding Celebration

by Amy Serrago

Jana and Vasant are a fun-loving couple who really know how to party! They met online and hit it off right away, sharing their first kiss on a date at Dave & Buster’s. Their amazing wedding took place, as Hindu weddings usually do, in multiple celebrations on multiple days. Starting with a sangeet, a traditional Hindu pre-wedding party that kicks off the festivities. Literally translated, sangeet means “sung together” and it includes traditional dances performed by relatives and friends of the Bride and Groom, songs sung to the bride in unison, and plenty of cutting loose on the dance floor! The purpose of this celebration is solely to focus on the joy and happiness surrounding the bride and groom before their official union. Jana and Vasant held their sangeet at one of our favorite Atlanta spots, Monday Night Brewing. The fun, laid back atmosphere of the brewery and its funky decor provided the perfect backdrop to this vibrant celebration!

Jana and Vasant’s “main event” was held the next day at the W Atlanta – Midtown. The bride and groom wore traditional Hindu wedding outfits and Vasant rode to the ceremony on the back of a decorated white horse, another wedding tradition steeped in the couple’s shared culture. They chose purple and gold as their wedding party’s color story, but touches of red were present in the styling as well, a significant part of Indian wedding tradition. The ceremony itself took place under a Hindu wedding canopy called a mandap that Jana and Vasant had decked out in glittering gold and lush florals. After they took the saptapadi, or seven steps, vowing to always love and support one another, Jana and Vasant exchanged floral garlands to symbolize that they now belong to each other.

For the reception, which was ornately decorated in sparkling gold, bright pink and deep purple, Jana and Vasant had a costume change. Jana was a knockout in her ornate green and gold gown with gorgeous embroidery and Vasant’s gray suit was perfectly paired with a matching green tie. The guys in the wedding party also changed into gray suits, wearing purple ties to coordinate with the ladies’ stunning gold and purple saris. Tables were set with gold linens and purple napkins and tall floral centerpieces added dramatic flair to a room already abuzz with celebratory good vibes. After dinner and speeches wishing the newlyweds well, Jana, Vasant and their guests took to the dance floor to get down and party!
