A Winter Wonderland: How We Captured This Couple’s Ice Stack Engagements & Bridals
When this adventurous couple reached out about their wedding, they had a vision—stunning engagement and bridal photos on the breathtaking ice stacks. With their wedding coming up this year, we knew we had to make it happen. Winter shoots come with their own set of challenges, but with the right preparation, they turn into magical, one-of-a-kind experiences.
If you’re dreaming of a winter engagement or bridal session, here’s how we made it work—and what you can do to prepare for your own snowy photoshoot!
Braving the Cold: How We Planned the Perfect Ice Stack Shoot
Winter photoshoots are all about timing and flexibility. Ice stacks form naturally on frozen lakes as sheets of ice break apart and pile up, creating a surreal, icy landscape. To capture this unique setting, we monitored weather conditions, researched the safest locations, and planned the session around the best lighting—golden hour on a clear day for that dreamy winter glow.
Dressing for the cold was key. The bride-to-be wore a stunning gown layered with insulated leggings and warm boots, while the groom-to-be bundled up in a classic suit with thermal layers underneath. Between shots, we wrapped them in blankets, took warm-up breaks, and kept the energy high with lots of movement and laughter.
How to Prepare for Your Own Winter Photoshoot
If you’re considering a winter engagement or bridal session, here are a few tips to make it comfortable, safe, and absolutely stunning:
1. Dress in Layers
Hidden thermal layers will keep you warm while still looking elegant.
Hand warmers and wool socks are lifesavers.
Bring a stylish coat or faux fur wrap for cozy yet chic photos.
2. Wear the Right Footwear
Heels in the snow? Not happening! Opt for boots and switch into dress shoes for quick shots.
If we’re on ice stacks, crampons or traction cleats can help with stability.
3. Keep Makeup & Hair Winter-Proof
Cold weather can dry out skin quickly, so hydrate well and use a good moisturizer.
A setting spray will keep your makeup from running if it gets windy.
If you’re worried about your hair getting frizzy or flat, bring a touch-up kit with bobby pins, hairspray, and a brush.
4. Be Flexible with the Weather
Winter weather is unpredictable, so we always have backup dates in mind.
Overcast skies create a soft, dreamy light, while fresh snowfall adds extra magic!
5. Enjoy the Moment
Winter photoshoots might be chilly, but they’re also incredibly romantic. Snuggle up, share laughs, and embrace the season!
