Last week’s Philadelphia Flower Show is the nation’s largest indoor exhibit of landscaping and floral designs. Thousands of people travel to the city’s convention center each March for inspiration, education – and a break from the now-dreary Winter scenery. Laura Larrick Walker of Buttercups Floral Design and I made a field trip to the show and I’ve put together a few thoughts and photos to give brides some ideas for their weddings.
Many of this year’s exhibits captured Asian influences, with bold colors and streamlined designs. Orchids were the star of the show. But one of the most interesting displays wasn’t floral in nature. In Korea, there is a food station known as the “King’s Table.” As part of the display, the designers created a “chandelier” of acrylic knives, forks and soup spoons – crazy clever!
Another neat design idea were the hanging baskets which were a part of several window box motifs. I can imagine using shepherd’s crooks with these charming hanging baskets lining a walkway. You can take something as simple as a coffee can, paint it, plant it, and hang it.
For the country chic set, I found two interesting ideas – an oak barrel topped off with sunflowers and an arrangement coming out of a riding boot. And bring the outdoors inside with a topiary. These lovely trees will fill a space nicely and add interesting shapes to your design elements.
Vintage is still strong – but instead of Mason jars, we saw a lot of antique silver containers. As part of the flower show, there is a merchant area and one exhibitor had a terrific display of silver pieces and tea cups. And flowers aren’t just for decor – there was a wonderful exhibit of jewelry made from flowers.
