Amanda and Ben met while Ben was in the last year of his internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado. Amanda was working as a nurse in the university hospital’s Cardiac ICU when Ben began his rotation there. He was taken by Amanda’s kind soul and compassion for others as they got to know each other, bonding over late night shifts. It took a while, but eventually it was Amanda who worked up the courage to ask Ben out on a date. That first date, on a rare day off for the pair, they shared a perfect Denver, CO afternoon, biking, drinking, talking and even shared their first kiss. A month later, Amanda had to move to Los Angeles for a contract nursing assignment at UCLA, but Ben was determined to make long distance work while he finished his residency. He was dedicated and made a conscious effort, spending all his free time (and money) calling, texting and visiting his love. When her six month contract ended, Amanda moved in with Ben (after all, he had promised her a puppy and a walk-in closet!) This adventurous couple decided they wanted to travel before Ben started a fellowship, so they moved to Seattle to pursue medical travel assignments. They’d been in Washington state for about six months when they decided they needed some warmth and sunshine, so they sold all of their stuff and moved to Hawaii. Where, two years later, Ben proposed. And of course, Amanda said yes!
